Seniors

Local candidates for The Greens have expressed their support for Seniors and the important role they play in our community. Jenny Brown, The Greens candidate for Mundingburra said, “The Greens have long recognized that the pension has not kept up with the real costs for pensioners and have been successful in gaining a commitment from the Federal Government for a rise in the pension in the May budget as part of the Economic Stimulus package."  Ms Brown said, ”This is about social justice and fair distribution of Australia's wealth”.

Jenny Stirling, the candidate for Townsville expressed her concern about the shortage of affordable accommodation for Seniors and said that, “The Greens were committed to improving the provision of housing and rental accommodation, both public and private that is affordable and available for Queensland seniors, particularly low income earners and retirees. The Greens would also work to ensure that State Government concessions and rebates for seniors kept pace with increases in the cost of living; particularly for low income self funded retirees.”  Ms Stirling said, “The Greens would create a Department for Seniors to provide for coordination and consolidation of seniors government services. The department would participate in development of urban, rural, transport and health services planning to deliver sustainable and Seniors appropriate outcomes.”

Frank Reilly, candidate for Thuringowa, in expressing his support for local Seniors and their contribution to community life stated that, “The Greens believe that we need to ease the financial burden on Seniors and help them look after our environment”. Mr Reilly said, “One way in which the Greens plan to help Seniors is by providing them with free solar panels to both reduce greenhouse emissions and help them save on their power bills. The Greens would also make public transport free to pensioners and students.”
